Delete your X (Twitter) account permanently

An X account is deleted by deactivating it: the profile disappears immediately and removal becomes final once the restore window lapses.

How to delete your account

  1. Download your archive first

Under Settings → Your account you can request a copy of all your data — the link arrives by email and takes days to prepare.

  2. Deactivate the account

Open Settings, choose Your account and open the Deactivate option. Confirm with your password.

  3. Your handle frees up only later

Username and display name vanish from view immediately but become reusable only after final deletion.

  4. The 30-day window

You can restore the account by signing back in for up to 30 days after deactivation. After that deletion is permanent.

Opt out of AI training

No separate AI-training opt-out is available in this service.

X's privacy policy states it may use collected and publicly available information to train machine-learning or AI models, and that third-party recipients may use shared data to train their own AI models unless you opt out of sharing. The policy documents no dedicated opt-out switch for X's own model training; a Grok-related setting reportedly exists in app settings but is not documented in the policy text retrieved.

Sources and verification

Known gaps

These facts could not be verified from a source — we don't guess:

  • Account deletion page Deactivation is self-service under Settings → Your account. The direct URL requires sign-in and help.x.com blocked automated fetching (HTTP 403). The entry point must be verified in a browser.
  • Data export The archive download lives under Settings → Your account; the URL could not be verified.
  • Privacy contact channel The policy names a ”Privacy Policy Inquiries” page without its URL being captured; no email is published.
  • AI-training opt-out It must be confirmed whether a Grok-training toggle exists under Settings → Privacy & safety.
