Delete your Google account permanently

Deleting your Google account permanently removes Gmail, Drive, Photos and everything in the account. Follow these five steps in order and you won't lose anything important.

How to delete your account

  1. Download your data first

Go to takeout.google.com, select the products whose data you want to keep, and create an archive. You'll get a download link by email — it can take from a few minutes to a few days. Downloading deletes nothing.

  2. Unhook your Gmail address

If you use your Gmail address for banking, social media or apps, change the address on those services before deleting. Also update your account recovery info, in case you try to recover the account later.

  3. Delete the account

Go to myaccount.google.com/deleteaccount (or Google Account → Data & privacy → More options → Delete your Google Account) and follow the instructions. Deleting one account doesn't delete others.

  4. Know what happens next

Your data disappears from view immediately, but complete deletion from Google's storage systems generally takes around two months — including up to a one-month recovery window. Encrypted backups may hold data for up to six months.

  5. Changed your mind? Act fast

A recently deleted account may be recoverable for a limited time with Google's account recovery tool. The exact window isn't promised — don't rely on it.

Opt out of AI training

The service offers settings to limit AI training:

Gemini Apps conversations are stored when 'Keep Activity' is on (on by default for signed-in users 18+). Turning it off stops saving future conversations, though they are still kept up to 72 hours to provide the service. Auto-delete defaults to 18 months (3/18/36 months selectable). A separate setting, off by default, controls whether audio and Gemini Live recordings are used to train generative AI models. These controls cover Gemini Apps; other Google AI features have separate settings.

What happens to your data after deletion

After you delete data, Google aims to remove it from view immediately and then completely delete it from storage systems — a process that generally takes around 2 months, including up to a one-month recovery window. Data can remain on encrypted backup storage for up to 6 months. Some data (e.g. financial records) is retained longer for legal obligations.

Frequently asked questions

Does downloading my data delete it from Google?

No. The Takeout archive is a copy for your own files; deletion happens separately in your account settings.

What happens to my Gmail address?

You can no longer sign in with it, and it stops receiving mail. Everything in the account — email, files, calendar, photos — is deleted. Services that use the address for sign-in stop working.

Can I delete only Gmail without deleting the whole account?

Yes. In your Google Account settings you can delete a single service (such as Gmail) via 'Delete a Google service' — the rest of the account stays.

Is my data used to train AI?

Gemini Apps activity is saved when 'Keep Activity' is on (on by default for signed-in users 18+). You can turn it off and set auto-delete to 3–36 months. A separate setting, off by default, controls whether audio and Gemini Live recordings train generative AI models.

What if I get no reply to my GDPR request?

The deadline is one month (GDPR Article 12(3)). After that you can complain to your data protection authority (Article 77). This site's generator exports an .ics reminder that wakes you up at the deadline.

Sources and verification

Known gaps

These facts could not be verified from a source — we don't guess:

  • DPO email The privacy policy mentions contacting Google's data protection office but publishes no direct DPO email. The official channel needs to be identified.
  • Privacy email No general GDPR email is published; the data request web form requires signing in with a Google account.
  • Account deletion page The deletion page says an account may be recoverable only ”within a certain amount of time” (recovery article: support.google.com/accounts/answer/6236295). The exact window must be confirmed before quoting a number of days.
